A community center for the mentally ill

Housing Program

Description of The Housing Program and Who Qualifies:

The Housing Unit provides apartments to pre-enrolled members of the Independence Center who have a mental illness and low income and who request housing by placing their names on the waiting list.

The case managers in the housing program assist members live successfully on their own in the community, while reinforcing any skills they already have to live independently.

Because social security disability is often members’ only means of support, finding affordable housing in Lake County is a persistent problem. The Housing Program addresses the residential needs of many of our members.

Description of The Housing Program’s Residential Properties:

The Housing Unit manages four residential properties in Waukegan .

Three of the sites provide permanent housing in which members live together in each of the units.

One larger facility, made up of studio and one-bedroom apartments, offers transitional housing to individual members for up to three years.

All four sites are convenient to public transportation and near the Independence Center , so that members have ready access to nearby businesses, programs and services, including the Independence Center .
